Mets Sign Yoenis Cespedes

\
Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes smiling after a home run.
The New York Mets announced today that they have signed outfielder Yoenis Cespesdes for 4 years and $110 million. This is the largest free agent signing the Mets have had in their history. Cespedes will be making an average of $27.5 million over the next four years. This ties Alex Rodriguez for the seventh highest contract in Major League Baseball history and the largest contract for an outfielder on a multi-year deal. Cespedes will making $22.5 M, $29 M, $29 M, and $29.5 M over the next four years and has a full no-trade clause. This is a huge signing for the Mets since they needed to have Cespedes back in their lineup. He is a huge presence in their lineup and will play a key role this season as a right-handed outfielder power bat which is something the Mets have lacked over the years. Cespedes will help protect Neil Walker and the rest of the lineup and take a lot of pressure off of the rest of the offense.

Neil Walker To Accept Qualifying Offer

New York Mets 2B Neil Walker has accepted the Mets qualifying offer for $17.2 million. This ensures that the Mets infield is set for next year and can now focus on resigning OF Yoenis Cespedes. With Walker coming back, IF Wilmer Flores and IF TJ Rivera will serve as valuable utility players off of the bench. This is a great situation for the Mets since Walker was the team's second best hitter last year behind Cespedes and gave them another powerful bat in the middle of the order. He will play a key role next year due to his solid glove in the field and much needed offense.

Kelly Johnson hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly. Neil Walker added an RBI single.

RHP Jacob deGrom pitched 7 outstanding innings and allowed only run on three hits in seven innings. He gave up one walk and had three strikeouts. He picked up another no-decision. Mets vs. Padres Game 115 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 8-6 to lose their fourth consecutive game and drop their record to 57-58. RHP Logan Verrett took the loss after he allowed 8 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings. He gave up 3 walks and had 4 strikeouts. After the game, Mets manager Terry Collins announced that Verrett will be replaced in the rotation by LHP Jon Niese. Verrett has struggled since being in the rotation and is best suited as a long man and spot starter. After Verrett was taken out, RHP Seth Lugo, RHP Erik Goedell and RHP Hansel combined to pitch six scoreless innings and retired the last 19 batters they faced.

The offense got a much needed 2 run homer from catcher Travis d'Arnaud. Hopefully this can get d'Arnaud's bat going. RF Jay Bruce hit an RBI single. Ty Kelly also hit an RBI single. Wilmer Flores drove in a run on a groundout, which resulted in a fielder's choice.

Michael Conforto Sent Down to Triple-A Again

The New York Mets have announced that they demoted outfielder Michael Conforto to Triple-A Las Vegas and have recalled right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo. Manager Terry Collins said it would be best for Conforto to play every day in the minor leagues and get his confidence back. This is the second time Conforto has been sent down this year. Since being recalled on June 18th, he has only been hitting .200 in 19 games. Hopefully Conforto will figure it out in Triple A. He's such a talented hitter and is still young, so it will only be a matter of time before he is back in the big leagues.

Mets vs. Diamondbacks Game 114 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-0 today to drop their record to 57-57. This is the first time the Mets have had a .500 record since April 20th. RHP Noah Syndergarrd took the loss  to fall to 9-7 after he allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in only five innings. He gave up one walk and had six strikeouts. He was unable to go deeper into the game due to a high pitch count. This has been a problem for Syndergarrd all season long. Hopefully he improves on this in the last two months of the season. After Syndergarrd was taken out, LHP Jon Niese came in and allowed 6 runs in the top of the sixth inning. He gave up 3 hits and 3 walks and one home run. He had two strikeouts. This was the far the worst appearance Niese had had since being traded back to the Mets. Bad outings will happen and it can only up from here for him.

The offense looked lifeless and managed just 5 hits. They have been struggling all season long. After the game, manager Terry Collins went on a rant in his post game press conference and called out his players and threatened to call up players from Triple-A. It's clear that Collins's frustration over the team's poor point has reached a breaking point. Hopefully this type of outburst from the manager will help inspire and motivate the Mets and help them get back on a winning streak.

The New York Mets lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in 11 innings last night to drop their record to 57-56. They remain 2.5 games out of the second wild card spot behind the Florida Marlins. LHP Jerry Blevins gave up a run in the twelfth inning  and took on a solo homer by Oscar Hernandez, the first of his career. Prior to Blevins coming in, closer Jeurys Familia pitched 2 scoreless innings. RHP Erik Goedell pitched a scoreless ninth inning. RHP Addison Reed gave up a run in the top of the eighth inning. RHP Bartolo Colon allowed 1 run in seven innings and one walk. He had eight strikeouts. He picked up a no-decision.

The offense struggled all night and managed just 3 singles by Ty Kelly, Jay Bruce and Neil Walker until the bottom of the ninth inning. Kelly Johnson hit a pinch-hit 2 run homer. Neil Walker followed with a single, but the Mets were unable to score. In the bottom of the tenth inning, 3B T.J. Rivera led off with his first major hit, but he was left stranded at second base. The Mets went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eleventh and twelfth, which has become a recurring theme this year. This was another crushing loss in a year that has turned out to be a major dissapointment.

Mets Sent Down Brandon Nimmo and Call up T.J. Rivera

The New York Mets have demoted outfielder Brandon Nimmo again to Triple-A Las Vegas and calling up infielder T.J. Rivera as a corresponding roster move. Nimmo was hitting only .237 in 64 at-bats in the big leagues. Rivera has had a great season in Triple-A and was just named Player of the Week for the Pacific Coast League. This was his second player of the week award and was also named Player of the Month in May. In his first full season in Triple-A, Rivera led the PCL with a .347 batting average, was third in RBI's with 80, and fourth in hits with 128. In six minor leagues, Rivera has hit at every level with a lifetime average of .323, an on-base percentage of .370 and a slugging percentage of .423 in over 600 games. Rivera will give the Mets a righty bat, which is something they desperately need. He will provide some versatility after playing first base, second base, third base and shortstop in the minors. He also recently started playing left field. Hopefully Rivera can provide the offense with some pop in the lineup. He's hit well in the minors for years and it's great that he is finally get his shot to see what he can do.

Mets Acquire Jon Niese from Pirates for Antonio Bastardo

The New York Mets traded  LHP Antonio Bastardo today to the Pittsburgh Pirates and brought back LHP Jon Niese. The Mets are also including case considerations in the deal. Bastardo will be going back to the Pirates after playing there last year. Niese spent the first 8 years of his career with the Mets. He had a career record of 69-67 with a 4.00 ERA in 205 games and 195 starts. Last year for the Pirates, Bastardo had a 2.98 ERA in 66 games. He had a 4.74 for the Mets this year. Hopefully this trade works out well for both teams and Niese and Bastardo can improve their seasons.

Mets Acquire Jay Bruce for Dilson Herrera and Max Wotell

The New York Mets acquired outfielder Jay Bruce from the Cincinnati Reds today in exchange for infielder Dilson Herrera and lhp minor-leaguer Max Wotell. Bruce was hitting .265 for the Reds this year with 22 doubles, six triples, 25 home runs and 80 RBI's and a .559 slugging percentage in 97 games. His 80 RBI's led the National League and his 25 homers is fourth in the majors. He is one of three players to have at least 22 doubles, 25 homers and 80 RBI's this year along with Edwin Encarnacion and David Ortiz. Bruce is hitting .360 with runners in scoring position.

Bruce is a three-time all star as well as a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Last season, he was one of nine major leaguers with at least 35 doubles, 26 homers and 87 RBI's. He finished the 2015 season the ninth-most extra base hits in the National League and also recorded 11 outfield assists, which was third-most in the National League.

Since Bruce came up in 2008, he has hit 233 career homers, fifth-most in the Major Leagues by a lefty hitter and  his 718 RBI's are sixth-most by a lefty hitter.

For his career, he has hit .249 with 238 doubles, 27 triples, 233 home runs and 718 RBI's.

This was a great move by the Mets. Bruce will really help improve their offense and help serve as a powerful middle of the order bat and help protect Yoenis Cespedes. He will make a difference with runners in scoring position. He will also serve as a great replacement in the batting order for Cespedes if he decides to opt out in the offseason.

The Mets offense struggled once again and couldn't get a timely hit with runners in scoring position. The only run they scored was on a solo homer by 1B James Loney. They were unable to score with the based loaded. It's very frustrating how they are not able to hit with men on base. Something has to be done to shake this lineup out of its slump. . They need to make a move to shake this offense up before the trading deadline at 4:00 P.M. on Monday. They need to get a bat like Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy. He hits well with runners in scoring position and would hopefully help the offense get some timely hits in key spots. He's the kind of hitter the Mets lack in their lineup and would definitely make a difference.

RHP Jacob deGrom had his worst outing of the season giving up 5 runs in just 3 2/3 innings. He allowed one walk and struck out 5. This was a far cry from Degrom's last outing where he had a complete game 1 hit shutout against the Phillies. He didn't have the same command as his last start and he fell behind many of the Marlins hitters. It was a difficult start for him, but he will bounce back. Every pitcher has a rough outing, even the best outings.  After deGrom was taken out, RHP Seth Lugo came in and gave up a run. LHP Antonio Bastardo also gave up a run.

RHP Logan Verrett pitched a solid game with 2 runs in 5 1/3 innings. He had one walk and struck out three.
