The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 35-49.

LHP Cionel Perez got the start as the "opener" and threw a scoreless top of the first. RHP Tobias Myers came in next and threw a scoreless top of the second, but then gave up three runs in the top of the third. Myers stayed in for the top of the fourth and threw a 1-2-3 inning.

RHP Kodai Senga came in next in the top of the fifth and had a 1-2-3 inning and worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth after he gave up a lead-off walk to 3B Alec Bohm and a double to the following hitter LF Brandon Marsh. Senga came back to retire the next three hitters he faced.

However, in the top of the seventh, Senga was not as fortunate after he gave up a lead-off single to CF Justin Crawford and two batters later, a two-run homer to DH Kyle Scwarber on a hittable fastball with two strikeouts.

Senga was able to settle down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the eighth and ninth.

His final line was five innings, four hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first four innings wasting a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third before finally breaking through in the bottom of the fifth.

CF Tyrone Taylor led off with a single and 3B Brett Baty followed with a walk. Two batters later, RF Carson Benge drove in Taylor with a RBI single.

LF Juan Soto followed with a walk to load the bases with one out, but then 3B Bo Bichette struck out and DH Eric Wagaman lined out to centerfield.

In the bottom of the sixth, catcher Francisco Alvarez led off with a double and two batters later, pinch-hitter A.J. Ewing tied the game with a two-run homer.

Baty followed with a walk and then catcher Luis Torrens singled to advance Baty to third. Benge followed by driving in Baty on a ground-out fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the seventh, 1B Jared Young was hit by a pitch with two outs and then Ewing then reached base on an infield hit and Young advanced to third on a throwing error by LHP Jose Alvarado. However, Baty grounded back to the pitcher to end the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth, they threatened to score again after Torrens led off with a walk and two batters later, Soto walked. Bichette then walked to load the bases with one out, however pinch-hitter Ronny Mauricio popped out to second and Alvarez struck out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Baty walked with two outs, but Torrens lined out for the last out.

The Met offense was unable to come up with any timely hits wasting numerous scoring opportunities. They went 2-16 with runners in scoring position leaving 14 runners on base.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Monday, June 29 at the Toronto Blue Jays at 7:07 p.m.

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 tonight at Citi Field for their seventh consecutive loss and dropped their record to 34-48.

Mets LHP Zach Thornton got off to a rocky start in the top of the first after he gave up a lead-off double to SS Trea Turner and then a single to DH Kyle Schwarber and a RBI single to 1B Bryce Harper.

Thornton was able to respond by striking out 3B Alec Bohm and was then helped out by his defense after 1B Jared Young robbed RF Brandon Marsh of a double down the line and then struck out CF Derrick Hill to end the inning.

Thornton had a scoreless top of the second and worked out of a jam in the top of the third allowing first two runners on and then retired Harper on a deep fly ball and then caught a break after Bohm lined out to Young who caught the line drive and then touched first base to double off Schwarber.

Thornton settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth and was then taken out.

His final line was six innings, five hits, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts.

RHP Huascar Brazoban came on in the top of the seventh and gave up the game-winning RBI single to Turner.

LHP Cionel Perez followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the eighth and ninth.

In the bottom of the first, CF Carson Benge led off with a single and LF Juan Soto nearly followed with a two-run homer, but CF Derek Hill made a tremendous leaping catch to rob him.

In the bottom of the second, CF A.J. Ewing singled with one out, but was then almost picked off until Turner made an error so Ewing advanced to second. 2B Ronny Mauricio then grounded out and 3B Brett Baty flew out to left.

In the bottom of the fourth, DH Bo Bichette led off with a double and two batters later, Young drove in Bichette with a RBI single. Ewing then advanced to first after grounding into a fielder's choice, but was once again picked off second.

Mets Fire Manager Carlos Mendoza

The New York Mets announced today that they have let go manager Carlos Mendoza according to Jon Heyman of the NY Post.

Andy Green is taking over as the interim manager. He had worked for the Mets as the senior vice president of player development and previously was the manager for the San Diego Padres.

This year was a difficult year for Mendoza and the Mets due to poor performances from the offense as well as starting rotation and a lot of injuries which all resulted in a 34-47 record.

Mendoza was hired by the Mets in November 2023 after working as the Yankees bench coach and helped the Mets advance to the NLCS in his first year in 2024.

Last year, he and his team got off to a 45-24 start on June 12, but it all took a downturn when Kodai Senga strained his right hamstring covering first base after 1B Pete Alonso made a high throw. The season was never the same again after Senga's injury and the Mets went 38-55 the rest of the way and were eliminated from the playoffs after the last day of the season.

It will be interesting to see where owner Steve Cohen and President of Baseball Operations go from here as they try to rebuild this franchise going forward.
