Mets Rout Yankees 12-2 Powered By Six Homers and Outstanding Start From Zac Thornton

The New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 12-2 this afternoon at Yankee Stadium and improved their record to 69-79.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a homer to right field for the 19th homer of the season and his fifth lead-off homer of the season.

In the top of the second, 1B Jared Young led off with a single and three batters later, catcher Luis Torrens hit a two-run homer.

In the top of the third, RF Carson Benge hit a solo homer. 

After a scoreless top of the fourth, DH Juan Soto doubled to lead off the top of the fifth and two batters later, Benge drove in Soto with a RBI single.

In the top of the seventh, Soto hit a solo homer for his 25th homer of the season.

In the top of the eighth, 2B Marcus Semien singled with two outs and then CF A.J. Ewing followed with a walk. Torrens then drove in Semien with a RBI double.

LF Nick Morabito followed with a walk to load the bases and then Lindor came up next and broke the game open with a grand slam to right center for his second homer.

In the top of the ninth, 1B Jared Young hit a solo homer.

Mets LHP Zac Thornton bounced back after the worst start of his young career and cruised through the first three innings retiring nine consecutive hitters to start his outing and then ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth. Thornton gave up a lead-off double to 1B Paul Goldscmidt and two batters later, a RBI single to LF Cody Bellinger.

Thornton came back to retire the next two hitters he faced and then threw a scoreless bottom of the fifth.

He gave up a solo homer to Bellinger in the bottom of the sixth and then got into a jam in the bottom of the seventh after he gave a one-out single to CF Spencer Jones and a walk to SS George Lombardi Jr. Manager Andy Green came out to talk to Thornton and then Thornton was able to get 2B Anthony Volpe to ground into a 5-4-3 double play and finish his outing on a high note.

Thornton's final line was seven innings, five hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts.

He picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 3.44.

RHP Tobias Myers came in next and closed it out with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the eighth and ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, September 13 at the Yankees at 1:35 p.m.
