Mets Beat Phillies 6-3 Powered By Juan Soto Three-Run Homer And Strong Outing From Zac Thornton

The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 tonight at Citi Field to snap their five-game losing streak and improved their record to 70-84.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a double and two batters later, 3B Bo Bichette singled to advance Lindor to third.

RF Carson Benge followed with a RBI single to score Lindor and then DH Mark Vientos followed with a walk to load the bases.

CF A.J. Ewing came up next and drove in Benge and Bichette with a two-run single.

The offense was held scoreless for the next five innings until the bottom of the sixth after 2B Marcus Semien led off with an infield single and two batters later, catcher Luis Torrens singled. Two batters later, LF Juan Soto came up next and broke the game open with a three-run homer.

Mets LHP Zac Thornton had a scoreless top of the first and then gave up a RBI double to 3B Bryson Stott in the top of the second.

Thornton settled down after that and threw scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourh and fith innings and then gave up a solo homer to LF Edmundo Sosa in the top of the sixth and was taken out after the inning.

Thornton's final line was six innings, five hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts. He picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 3.40.

LHP Nate Lavender came in next in the top of the seventh and gave up a one-out solo homer to CF Derek Hill and then came back to retire the next four hitters he faced before being taken out with two outs in the top of the eighth.

RHP Dedniel Nunez followed and picked up the last out in the eighth and then closed it out with a 1-2-3 1-2-3 top of the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, September 19 at home against the Phillies at 4:10 p.m.
