The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 to win their third consecutive game and improve their record to 63-62. They are now only 3.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wildcard spot in the National League. The offense got off to a hot start when 1B Wilmer Flores hit a 3 run homer in the first innings. Flores continues to hit well against left-handed pitching. 3B Jose Reyes hit an RBI single. Reyes has another great night with 4 hits, 3 runs scored and an RBI single. He has been on fire since coming off DL. SS Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI double. CF Justin Ruggiano hit a solo homer. 1B James Loney hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth inning.
Starting pitcher LHP Jon Niese came out after only 4 batters after hurting his knee. Rookie RHP Robert Gsellman came in his MLB debut and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings on two hits. He gave up three walks and had two strikeouts. He picked up his first ML win. LHP Josh Smoker came in next and allowed a run in two innings. LHP Jerry Blevins allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh and got one out. RHP Jim Henderson got the last two outs in the seventh. RHP Addison Reed pitched a scoreless eighth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up his 42th save.
