The New York Mets lost to the New York Yankees tonight 9-5 to drop their record to 55-52 and fall 7.5 behind the Washington Nationals for first place in the National League East. LHP Steven Matz took loss after a rough outing where he allowed 6 runs on six hits in six innings. He had six strikeouts and one walk. RHP Hansel Robles came in next and allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh. LHP Josh Edgin allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a based loaded walk to Didi Gregorious.
The Mets offense got off to a hot start on a leadoff homer by RF Curtis Granderson. 1B James Loney also drove in a run in the first inning on an RBI single. However, they weren't able to score any more runs with the based loaded and one out. LF Michael Conforto struck out and SS Wilmer Flores grounded into a double play. This has been a recurring theme all season that the offense hasn't been able to get a key hit with runners in scoring position. Catcher Rene Rivera hit an RBI single to tie the game in the top of the third inning. 1B James Loney had hit 2nd RBI of the night in the top of the seventh inning with a groundout. 2B Neil Walker hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning.
