The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 5-1 today to take two of out three games in the series to win their second consecutive game and improve their record to 59-58. They remain 2 games behind the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals for the second NL wild-card spot. 1B Wilmer Flores continued his success against left-handed pitching with a solo homer off Padres starter Clayton Richard, his twelfth of the season. 2B Neil Walker also hit a solo homer, his 21st of the year. SS Jose Reyes scored on a wild pitch. 3B TJ Rivera hit a 2 run double.
LHP Steven Matz was outstanding today and took a no-hitter into the top of the eighth inning. He lost his no-hitter with one out in the eighth on a single by Alexi Ramirez. He pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings allowing only just one single and two walks. He had eight strikeouts. He picked up his ninth win of the season. RHP Addison Reed got the last two outs in the top of the eighth, RHP Gabriel Ynoa gave up a run in the top of the ninth inning on a single by Wil Myers.
