The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 1-0 to lose two out of three games in the series and drop their record to 77-69. They remain a 1/2 ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals for the 2nd wild card spot and a 1/2 game behind the San Francisco Giants for the first wild card spot since both the Gianst and Cardinals lost today. The Mets offense struggled all game and managed only three hits. They had the based loaded and one out in the top of the first, but were unable to score. RF Jay Bruce struck out with one out with the based loaded and 2B TJ Rivera flew out to end the inning. The Mets didn't have another hit until the top of the ninth inning, but were unable to tie the game.
RHP Robert Gsellman pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed only 5 hits and one walk. He had 4 strikeouts. He picked up a no-decision. LHP Josh Smoker came in and struck out RF Bryce Harper to end the inning. RHP Fernando Salas allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo homer by catcher Wilson Ramos. Salas rebounded and stayed in and bounced back to pitch a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
