LHP Steven Matz |
The New York Mets lost to the Colorado Rockies 2-0 tonight for their fifth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 17-14. LHP Steven Matz bounced after several rough starts and had his best outing of the season. Matz gave up one run in six innings on a solo homer by 3B Nolan Arenado with five strikeouts. He needed to have a performance like this to give him some confidence. Hopefully he can take the momentum from this start and build off it going forward and emerge as the number 3 starter behind RHP Jacob deGrom and RHP Noah Syndergarrd. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Robert Gsellman followed with a scoreless top of the eighth inning, but gave up a run in the top of the ninth single on an RBI single by pinch hitter David Dahl.
The offense was lifeless again and managed six hits and struggled with men on base after they went 0-4 with runners in scoring position (RISP. This was the third time in the last four games that they have been shut out. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera and RF Jay Bruce were the only bright spots in the lineup with two hits.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 P.M. against the Rockies in the final game of the series.
