CF Michael Conforto

The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 8-5 last night in the second game of a doubleheader and improved their record to 26-25. After a three-hour rain delay, the offense got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning after CF Michael Conforto singled with one out, RF Jay Bruce hit a double and then 1B Adrian Gonzalez hit a RBI single. Catcher Kevin Plawecki followed with an RBI ground-out. After a scoreless top of the second inning, LF Brandon Nimmo led off with a homer in the top of the third and then Conforto followed with a single. Bruce flew out and then Gonzalez struck out. Plawecki singled, but then 3B Jose Reyes grounded out with two outs and two men on base. The offense then went quiet in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, but in the top of the sixth inning, Plawecki singled with one out and then Reyes and 2B Luis Guillorme also singled to load the bases. SS Amed Rosario stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run single. Pinch-hitter Jose Bautista grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the seventh inning, Conforto led off with a single and then Bruce grounded into a fielder's choice. Gonzalez and Plawecki hit back-to-back singles and then Reyes struck out. Guillorme then hit a two-run single and then Rosario drove in his third run of the night with a RBI single. After that, the bats were quiet for the top of the eighth and ninth innings.
LF P.J. Conlon made his second career start and didn't make it out of the bottom of the third inning. Conlon gave up a solo homer to catcher Kurt Suzki in the bottom of the second inning and then a two-run single to 1B Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the third inning. He was taken out after RF Jay Bruce misplayed a line drive by RF Nick Markakis. His final line was: four runs, eight hits, 1 strikeouts in 2 + innings. RHP Hansel Robles came in next and gave up a sacrifice fly to Suzuki and hit 3B Johan Camargo, but got SS Dwansby Swanson to groundout. Robles pitched scoreless innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings and wound up throwing three scoreless innings with two hits and a walk and three strikeouts. RHP Robert Gsellman gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but managed to pick up his 5th win. RHP Jacob Rhyme followed and pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Jeurys Familia closed it out with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings and picked up his 14th save.
The Mets next game is tonight at 7:35 against the Braves.
