Mets vs. Braves Game 53 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-1 tonight to split their four game series and improved their record to 27-26. The offense struggled against Braves starter RHP Julio Tehran for the first three innings, but broke through in the top of the fourth inning. RF Jay Bruce doubled to lead off the inning, catcher Kevin Plawecki flew out and then 1B Adrian Gonzalez drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double. In the top of the seventh, SS Amed Rosario tripled and CF Brandon Nimmo drove him in with an RBI single. In the top of the eighth inning with one out, LF Jose Bautista doubled, Bruce drew an intentional walk and Plawecki walked to load the bases. Gonzalez came up and delivered again with an RBI single. In the top of the ninth inning, Rosario doubled and then Nimmo drove in another run with an RBI single.

:LHP Jason Vargas had his best start of the start and only had to get out of one jam in the bottom of the second inning after he gave up a double to LF Charlie Culverson and then intentionally walked SS Dwansby Swanson. He gave up no runs, two hits, one walk, and struck out two in five innings. Manager Mickey Callaway decided to take him out after five innings and 65 pitches. Vargas picked up his second win on the season. RHP Tim Peterson came in next in the bottom of the sixth in his ML debut and had a scoreless inning, but gave up a solo homer to 3B Johan Camargo in the bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Jeurys Familia followed and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning and was helped out by his defense after Rosario and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera turned a sharp double play to end the inning. RHP Robert Gsellman closed out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning and picked up the second save of his career.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:10 P.M. against the Chicago Cubs.
