Mets vs. Braves Game 50 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 4-3 today in the first game of their doubleheader for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 25-25. In the top of the first inning, LF Brandon Nimmo led off with a hit by pitch and then 2B Asdrubal Cabrera reached on an error by Braves SS Dwansby Swanson. CF Michael Conforto then struck out and LF Jose Bautista walked to load the bases. RF Jay Bruce struck out, but catcher Devin Mesoraco walked to bring in a run. In the top of the fourth inning, Mesoraco led off with a single and then 3B Luis Guillorme drove him with a double. In the top of the ninth inning, Mesoraco hit the go-ahead solo home run. This was his fifth home run in 46 at-bats with the Mets and second consecutive game with a homer in the top of the ninth inning.

RHP Jacob deGrom gave up a hit to CF Ender Inciarte in the bottom of the first inning and then a single to 2B Ozzie Albies and a walk to 1B Freddie Freeman to load the bases. deGrom got out of the jam after he got RF Nick Markakis to ground into a double play. In the bottom of the third inning, he had to deal with some rain, but the umpires decided to keep on playing. In the bottom of the fourth inning, he gave up a lead-off single to Freeman and then another single to Markakis which made it first and third with no out and then gave up a walk to load the bases with one out. deGrom was able to escape out of another jam after he struck out LF Preston Tucker and 3B Johan Camargo to end the inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, he was able to come back into the game after a 30 minute rain delay and dominated with a 8 pitch inning. He gave up a solo homer to catcher Tyler Flowers to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, and then after walked Tucker, 2B Asdrubal Cabrera misplaced a groundball by Camargo which made it first and third with no outs. He battled back again by striking outu SS Dwansby Swanson and then got pinch-hitter Kurt Suzuki to pop up and Inciarte to groundout to end the inning and was then taken out. This was an outstanding performance for deGrom after he bucked down multiple times with men on base. His final line was 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and gave up a game-tying single to Markakis. Lugo came back out for the bottom of the ninth inning and gave up a two-run walk-off homer to Charlie Culberson.

The Mets have another game tonight at 7:10 P.M. against the Braves in second game of doubleheader.
