Mets vs. Braves Game 29 Recap

LHP Jason Vargas

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 11-0 today and were swept in the three-game series and dropped their record to 17-12. LHP Jason Vargas got into immediate trouble in the top of the first inning after a RBI double to RF Nick Markakis and a two-run homer to the next batter catcher Kurt Suzuki. He settled down for the next three innings and gave up no runs. In the top of the fifth inning, Vargas ran into trouble again after he gave up a leadoff homer to LF Ronald Acuna Jr and a two-run homer to Markakis before recording an out. He was taken out with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. His final line was: 4 2/3 innings, 11 hits, six earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. RHP Matt Harvey came in next and got the last out in the top of the fifth inning and pitched a scoreless top of the sixth inning. Harvey came back out for the top of the seventh inning and had a tough time after he gave up a solo homer to 3B Charlie Culberson, a sac fly to Braves starter RHP Julio Tehran and a three-run homer to 2B Ozzie Albies. LHP Jerry Blevins had to come in and struck out 1B Freddie Freeman to end the innings. Blevins stayed in for the top of the eighth inning and pitched a scoreless innings. RHP Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

The Mets offense struggled against Braves starter RHP Julio Tehran and were no-hit for the first 6 2/3 innings. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera broke up the no-hitter with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mets had their best chance to score in the bottom of the seventh inning after loading the bases, but weren't able to do so. In the bottom of the ninth inning, RF Brandon Nimmo lead off with  a walk and CF Juan Lagares singled, but the next three hitters were retired.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Colorado Rockies at 7:10 P.M.
