Mets vs. Rockies Game 30 Recap

RHP Zack Wheeler


The New York Mets lost to the Colarado Rockies 8-7 tonight for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 17-13. RHP Zack Wheeler struggled immediately in the top of the first inning and gave up hits to six of the first seven batters. and allowed thee runs. Wheeler gave up a RBI single to 3B Nolan Arenado, sac fly to RF Carlos Gonzalez, and an RBI double to SS Trevor Story. In the top of the second inning, he gave up another run on a solo homer by CF Charlie Blackmon. In the top of the third inning, he had his first scoreless inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Wheeler worked his way out of a jam after Blackmon walked and LF Gerardo Parra singled. In the top of the fifth inning, he had his first 1-2-3 inning of the night throwing only seven pitches. In the top of the sixth inning, Wheeler gave up a solo homer to catcher Tony Wolters. In the top of the seventh inning, he gave up a leadoff single to Arenando and a walk to Gonzalez before being taken out. His final line was: 6 innings pitched, 10 hits, 8 runs, 8 earned runs, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and gave up an RBI single to 1B Ian Desmond. Lugo was able to get out of the inning and pitched scoreless innings in the top of the eighth and ninth innings.

The offense responded immediately in the bottom of the first inning after 2B Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer, which snapped their scoreless streak at 18 innings. After wasting scoring opportunities in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings,  3B Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 8-4. Pinch hitter Wilmer Flores led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double. SS Amed Rosario followed with an RBI single. RF Brandon Nimmo hit a pop up, but Cabrera hit a RBI triple to bring tying run to the plate. LF Yoenis Cespedes struck out and 1B Jay Bruce walked to bring winning runs to the plate. Frazier hit a RBI single, which made it a one run game. CF Michael Conforto struck out to end the game with winning run on second base. Conforto went 0-5 with four strikeouts on the night and is now 5-for-his-last-38.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:10 P.M. against the Rockies.
