Mets vs. Marlins Game 43 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 2-0 tonight for their fourth consecutive win and improved their record to 24-19. The offense only had two hits, but managed to come through with runners in scoring position. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera drove home the first run of the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning. Infielder Wilmer Flores hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

LHP Jason Vargas dominated through the first four innings before running into some trouble in the top of the fifth. Vargas struck out 1B Justin Bour to lead off the inning, walked LF Cameron Maybin, and then a single to LF Miguel Rojas. He bucked down with the based loaded and one out and struck out CF Lewin Brinson and the opposing starter RHP Eilisier Hernandez to end the inning. This was the best start of his season in which he allowed no runs, two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings. He picked up his first win of the year. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and got two quick outs, but was unable to finish off the inning after he gave up a single to 2B Starlin Castro and a walk to RF Brian Anderson and was then taken out. LHP Jerry Blevins followed and walked Bour to load the bases. which was the only batter he faced. RHP A.J. Ramos had to come with the based loaded and struck out pinch-hitter Derek Dietrich to end the inning. Ramos came back out for the top of the seventh inning and walked the first batter he faced. He responded by striking out Brinson and then got pinch hitter J.B. Shuck to ground into a double play to end the inning. RHP Seth Lugo appeared next and pitched a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia gave up a one out double to Dietrich, but managed to work around out it and picked a scoreless top of the ninth inning to pick up his 13th save on the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:10 P.M. against the Marlins.
