The New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-3 tonight and improved their record to 31-33. LHP Steven Matz started out well with two scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the third. Matz gave up a lead-off walk to catcher Tony Walters and later allowed RBI singles to CF Charlie Blackmon and 3B Nolan Arenado. He gave up an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning after RF Michael Conforto made a throwing error which allowed 2B Brandon Rodgers to score. Matz settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. His final line was 6 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), 10 strikeouts and 2 walks on a career-high 120 pitches. It was the second time in Matz's career that he's thrown 120 pitches dating back to August 6, 2016. He showed that he could have success with his curveball and was able to get out of trouble with men on base several times. RHP Seth Lugo followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the seventh and eighth innings with three strikeouts. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out and picked up his fourteenth save.
In the bottom of the second inning, 3B Todd Frazier singled and two batters later CF Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer. RF Michael Conforto walked with two outs and catcher Wilson Ramos to move Conforto to third. 3B Todd Frazier drove in Conforto with an RBI single. In the bottom of the sixth, Ramos led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Frazier. SS Amed Rosario grounded into a double play, but was able to drive in a run. In the bottom of the seventh inning, first baseman Pete Alonso led off with a solo homer, his 21st homer of the year.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the Rockies at 1:10 p.m.
