Mets vs. Yankees Game 66 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the New York Yankees 12-5 this afternoon in the first game of their double-headers and dropped their record to 32-34. RHP Zack Wheeler started out well with  a scoreless top of the bottom of the inning, but gave up a run in the bottom of the second inning after 1B Kendrys Morales hit a RBI single. In the bottom of the third inning, he gave up a lead-off single to LF Brett Gardener and appeared to get a force out at 2B after 3B D.J. LeMaheu hit a comebacker back to the mound and Wheeler threw it to second, but SS Amed Rosario never had his foot on the bag and everyone was safe. Two batters later, catcher Gary Sanchez hit a RBI single, but he struck out SS Didi Gregarious to end the inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, 3B Gio Ursela hit a two-run homer. 3B Todd Frazier followed a throwing error and a walk and wild pitch put runners on the corners with two outs. DH Luke Voit broke the game open with a three-run homer. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Wheeler's day worsened after he gave up an RBI triple to Gardner and was taken out soon after. His final line was 4.2 innings, 10 hits, 9 runs (5 earned), 1 walk and six strikeouts. RHP Wilmer Font came in next and gave up a run in 1.2 innings. RHP Tim Peterson gave up a two-run homer to Gary Sanchez in the bottom of the eighth.

The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings against Yankees starter RHP Masahiro Tanaka until the top of the third inning after SS Amed Rosario reached on a throwing error by Yankees SS Didi Gregarious. Catcher Tomas Nido followed with a single and CF Juan Lagares reached on an infield hit. 2B Jeff McNeil hit a three-run homer.  In the top of the fifth inning, 1B Dom Smith led off with a double and Rosario drove him in with an RBI single. After that the bats were shut down by Tanaka and the Yankees pen.

The Mets-Yankees second game is tonight at 7:05 p.m.
