Mets vs. Braves Game 72 Recap

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler (Credits to SNY.TV)

The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 12-3 tonight for their fourth loss in last five games and dropped their record to 34-38. RHP Zack Wheeler had a difficult night with bad defense as well allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Wheeler was hurt by his lack of command and fell behind too many hitters. He has not been the same pitcher he was in second half of last year and is struggling with keeping pitch count down. He has not shown to be good enough to earn an extension in the offseason. RHP Jeurys Familia followed and gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh and recorded one out. RHP Drew Gagnon gave up four runs in 1.1 innings. Gagnon and Familia along with the rest of the pen have been awful all year long and one of the key reasons why this team has underachieved so much to this point.  RHP Brooks Pounders had to come in to get the last out in the bottom of the eighth.

1B Pete Alonso drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Wheeler drove in a run with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. 2B Robinson Cano hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Braves at 7:20 p.m.
