The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 this afternoon to lose three out of four games in the series and dropped their record to 34-37. LHP Jason Vargas gave up three runs (two earned) on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts in four innings. Vargas left in the game in the top of the fourth with an injury and it was revealed later that he had a calf injury. RHP Wilmer Font came in next and threw three scoreless in the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings giving no hits and one walk with three strikeouts. RHP Chris Flexen followed and gave up a solo homer to Met killer SS Paul DeJong. Flexen took the loss and is now 0-3 on the season. Newly acquired RHP Brooks Pounder made his debut in the top of the ninth and threw a scoreless inning.
LF Dominic Smith lead-off in the bottom of the first with a double and 3B J.D. Davis followed with a RBI single to bring home Smith. In the bottom of the third inning, 2B Robinson Cano doubled with two outs and SS Adeiny Hecchavaria drove him in with an RBI single and advanced to second base on the throw home by Cardinals center fielder Harrison Bader. CF Juan Lagares followed with a RBI single. After that the bats went quiet and had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth after 3B Todd Frazier singled with one out, but catcher Wilson Ramos grounded into a double play to end the game.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night in Atlanta against the Braves at 7:20 p.m.
