Mets vs. Cubs Game 76 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-4 this afternoon and improved their record to 36-40. CF Michael Conforto drew a lead-off walk in the top of the second inning and 3B J.D. Davis followed with a single. 1B Dominic Smith then grounded into a double play, which scored Conforto. Catcher Tomas Nido singled to lead off the next inning and after a Jason Vargas strikeout, RF Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer. Conforto hit a solo homer to tie the game 4-4. McNeil hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh which scored SS Adeiny Hecchavaria.

LHP Jason Vargas gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. RHP Brooks Pounders followed and got the last out in the bottom of the fifth and stayed in for the bottom of the sixth and threw a scoreless innings. Pounders threw 1.1 scoreless innings and picked up his first win. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning for his 16th save of the year.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Cubs at 2:20 p.m.
