The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs this afternoon 10-2 for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 37-40. 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer in the top of the first for his 26th homer of the season that traveled 419 feet and an exit velocity of 108.1 mph. This ties Darryl Strawberry's record in 1983 for most homers by a Met rookie. Catcher Wilson Ramos led off the top of the second inning with a walk and SS Amed Rosario doubled. CF Juan Lagares and RHP Zack Wheeler struck out, but 2B Jeff McNeil came through with a two-run single. LF J.D Davis singled with one out in the top of the third and 3B Todd Frazier followed with a two-run homer. Rosario singled to lead off the top of the fourth and three batters later, McNeil struck again with an RBI double. It was his fifth consecutive multi-hit game and second straight three-RBI game. Davis reached on an error in the fifth and scored on an RBI single by RF Michael Conforto. Ramos followed with a two-run homer. Alonso hit at two-out double in the top of the sixth and moved to third on a wild pitch to Dom Smith and then Frazier brought in Alonso with an infield hit.
RHP Zack Wheeler worked around baserunners in the first two innings and was able to escape trouble without giving up any runs. Wheeler settled down after that and retired 12 straight batters through the second and fifth innings. He continued his dominance in the bottom of the sixth after he retired the side in order for 15 consecutive batters. In the bottom of the seventh, Wheeler gave up base hits to catcher Wilson Contreras and CF Jason Heyward and walked RF Carlos Gonzalez to load the bases with none out. He was able to get out of the jam after 1B Victor Caratini grounded into a double play and was taken out after the inning. He had an excellent outing with seven outstanding innings and his final line was one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk and he lowered his ERA to 4.69. Wheeler picked up his sixth win. RHP Chris Flexen followed and closed it out with two scoreless inning in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Cubs at 2:20 p.m.
