The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 tonight and improved their record to 34-36. The offense jumped out to a fast start in the bottom of the first inning after 2B Jeff McNeil led off with a hit-by pitch and LF J.D. Davis. RF Michael Conforto struck out, but 1B Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer that went 458 feet which was the longest home run of his career. It was Alonso's 23th homer, which is three shy of Darryl Strawberry's record of 26 homers from his rookie season in 1983. 3B Todd Frazier followed with a single and catcher Wilson Ramos hit a RBI double.CF Carlos Gomez drove in Ramos with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth, Gomez led off with a walk and after two outs, Davis singled and Conforto hit an RBI single to drive in Gomez. Alonso was hit by a pitch and Frazier drew a based loaded walk.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd gave up a solo homer to LF Dexter Fowler in the top of the first inning and another run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by RF Marcel Ozuna. Syndergard gave up a sacrifice fly to Fowler in the top of the fifth. He had to come out in the top of the sixth due to a right hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated tomorrow. His final line was 6 innings, five runs (four earned), two walks and four strikeouts. He picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 4.55. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and gave a walk, two singles and a sacrifice fly, but was able to get out of the inning. RHP Seth Lugo worked his way out of trouble after he loaded the bases striking out the side and struck out 1B Matt Carpentar to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and had another shaky outing, but was helped out by his defense after McNeil had a perfect throw to throw out pinch runner Jack Flaherty to end the inning and helped him pick up his 15th save on the year.
