The New York Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants 7-0 tonight and improved their record to 29-32. LHP Jason Vargas had his best start of the season with a complete game shut-out and longest outing since June 2, 2017 and built off his recent success after he came into tonight's outing with a 2.40 ERA in his last six starts.  He retired 21 out of the last 24 hitters he faced. Vargas kept the Giants hitters off balanced with his change-up and varying speeds. His final line was no runs on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 3.57.

The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning after LF Jeff McNeil led off with a double, 1B Pete Alonso flew out and 2B Robinson Cano drove in McNeil with an RBI ground-out. Cano later left the game after he re-aggravated his quad injury. In the bottom of the fourth inning, RF Michael Conforto homered to start the inning and catcher Wilson Ramos and third baseman Todd Frazier walked.. SS Amed Rosario broke the game open with a three-run homer. In the bottom of the fifth inning, 1B Pete Alonso led off with a hit by pitch and advanced to third after Giants starter RHP Tyler Beede made a throwing error. Conforto later drove in Alonso with a sac fly. SS Adeiny Hechavarria hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the Giants at 12:10 p.m.
