Mets vs. Phillies Game 82 Recap

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler (Credits to USATodaySports)



The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 this afternoon in another heartbreaking defeat for their sixth consecutive loss and dropped the record to 37-45. RHP Zack Wheeler cruised the first five innings with a lightning fastball at 96, 97 and 99 mph. Wheeler gave up his only run on a solo homer to RF Bryce Harper in the bottom of the sixth and was taken out after the inning. His final line was one run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in six innings. He lowered his ERA to 4.52. RHP Brooks Pounders followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Chris Flexen threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. Flexen has done well since he was moved to the bullpen allowing one earned run in seven innings with nine strikeouts and two hits. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth to close it out and walked 2B Cesar Hernandez to lead off the inning and then gave up a two-run homer to 3B Maikel Franco. He then struck out catcher J.T. Realmuto, but walked pinch-hitter Sean Rodriguez and then gave up a hard hit single to LF Scott Kingery and then a three-run walk-off homer to SS Jean Segura.

The offense was held to one hit over the first eight innings, but finally broke through in the top of teh ninth inning after RF Michael Conforto singled and 3B Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer. 1B Dom Smith followed with a single and catcher Wilson Ramos moved Smith to third with a single. SS Amed Rosario drove in Smith with an RBI ground-out back to the pitcher.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night back at home against the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 p.m.
