Mets vs. Phillies Game 81 Recap

Mets LHP Jason Vargas (Credits to USATodaySports)



The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 tonight in 10 innings for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 37-44. LHP Jason Vargas was dominant early on with five scoreless innings, but gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth, but gave up a solo homer to SS Jean Segura in the bottom of the sixth. Vargas was able to avoid giving up any more runs in the sixth and stayed in for the bottom of the seventh and was taken out with one out. His final line was 6.1 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. He kept the Phillies hitters off balanced all night with his curve-ball and change-up. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and gave up a RBI single to 2B
Cesar Hernandez and a two-run single to Segura. Lugo was able to keep the game tied after he struck out 1B Rhys Hoskins with the based loaded. RHP Robert Gsellman threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning with two strikeouts. Rookie RHP Stephen Nogosek came on in the bottom of the tenth inning and gave up a walk and a single and a walk-off single to LF Jay Bruce.

The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings until the top of the fourth inning after LF Dom Smith hit a solo homer. This was the third consecutive game Smith has homered and he ended up 3-3 with a walk. RF Jeff McNeil also hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth. Catcher Tomas Nido hit a RBI single in the top of the sixth. McNeil drove in another run with an RBI double in the top of the sixth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Phillies at 1:05 p.m in the final game of the series.
