The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 5-4 this afternoon for their seventh consecutive loss and dropped their record to 37-47. LHP Steven Matz gave up back-to back singles to CF Ronald Acuna Jr. and SS Dansby Swanson to start the game and then struck out 1B Freddie Freeman, but then 3B Josh Donaldson and gave up a two-run single to 2B Ozzie Albies. Matz threw a scoreless top of the second inning and was then taken out after an hour- ten minute rain delay. His final line was two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks in two innings. RHP Chris Mazza followed for his MLB debut in the top of the third and gave up a single to Acuna and an RBI double to Swanson, but settled down after that. Mazza threw three scoreless innings in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. RHP Seth Lugo followed and threw a scoreless top of the seventh innings, but his struggles continued in the top of the eighth after he gave up back-to-back homers to RF Nick Markakis and LF Austin Riley. RHP Brooks Pounders had to come in to get the last out in the top of the eighth inning and stayed in for the top of the ninth and threw a scoreless inning.
The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the bottom of the third inning after LF Dominic Smith hit a solo homer. SS Amed Rosario led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double and two batters later, RF Jeff McNeil drove in Rosario with an RBI double. Rosario led off the sixth with a single, stole second and came around to score on McNeil's second RBI double. Two batters later, 2B Robinson Cano drove in McNeil with an RBI single.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Braves on Sunday Night Baseball at 7:05 p.m.
