Mets vs. Phillies Game 79 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 13-7 tonight for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 37-42. LHP Steven Matz's struggles continued in Citizens Bank Park and gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning after being handed a two-run lead in the top of the first. Matz gave up solo homers to SS Jean Segura and 1B Rhys Hoskins and later an RBI single to CF Roman Quinn. In the bottom of the second inning, he gave up a single to Segura and an RBI double to RF Bryce Harper. Matz had a scoreless bottom of the third inning, but gave up another double to Segura and RBI double to Harper in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, he walked Quinn and gave up a two-run homer to 1B Rhys Hoskins and was taken out after that. His final line was seven runs on 10 hits with three walks in 4.1 innings. RHP Brooks Pounders came in next and was hurt by poor defense in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings after CF Michael Conforto and RF Jeff McNeil misjudged fly balls. Pounders allowed five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings. RHP Stephen Nogosek threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, but gave up a two-run single to LF Scott Kingery in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning after Conforto hit a RBI double and 3B Todd Frazier followed with an RBI single. In the top of the third inning, Frazier hit a solo homer and two batters later, catcher Wilson Ramos tied it up with a solo homer. Conforto hit a solo homer to lead off the top of the fifth and LF Dom Smith doubled and Ramos singled, SS Amed Rosario hit a sacrifice fly. Smith added a solo homer in the top of the ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Phillies at 7:05 p.m.
