The New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-3 this afternoon to split their four game series and dropped their record to 37-41. RHP Jacob deGrom gave two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in six innings. degrom had some dicomfort in the bottom of the sixth, which might have caused his early exit. It's unknown at this time why he came out after six. Hopefully Jake is ok. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, but wasn't as sharp as he's usually been. In the bottom of the eighth, Lugo stayed in despite not having his best stuff with his fastball and curveball and gave up a three-run homer to SS Javier Baez.
The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings, but broke through in the top of the fourth inning after 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer. This was Alonso's 27th homer of the year that traveled at an exit velocity of 110 mph and 454 mph and breaks Darryl Strawberry's record for most homers in a season by a Mets rookie. Catcher Tomas Nido hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning. CF Juan Lagares followed with a double and deGrom helped out his own cause with a RBI single.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night in Philadelphia against the Phillies at 7:05 p.m.
