The New York Mets defeated the Detriot Tigers 4-3 this afternoon to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record back to .500 at 26-26. RHP Zack Wheeler gave up a solo homer to 3B Nick Castellanos in the top of the first inning. Wheeler had a scoreless top of the second inning, but gave up a two-run single to Castellanos in the top of the third inning. He settled down after that and retired the next thirteenth batters. Wheeler pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this year and gave up a single to CF Jacoby Jones, but then struck out pinch hitter Miguel Cabrera. He walked CF Nick Goodrum and was then taken out. His final line was three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in 7.1 innings. Wheeler picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 4.63.  RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and had his best outing of the year striking out 3B Dawel Lugo and Castellanos to end the inning. Familia had a sharp sinker at 96 mph and looked like he did in 2015. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff walk and later a single to 1B Brandon Dixon. Diaz allowed Dixon to steal second base, but was able to close it out and picked up his 13th save out of 14 opportunities.

The offense was held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning after 1B Dominic Smith led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by catcher Wilson Ramos. 3B Todd Frazier pushed a bunt into right field against the shift which brought home Smith. LF Carlos Gomez struck out, by 2B Adeiny Hechavarria hit a three-run homer.  After that the bats went quiet and weren't able to score any more runs.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night in L.A. at the Dodgers at 8:10 p.m.
