The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 3-2 this afternoon to lose two out of three games in the series and dropped their record to 17-20. RHP Wilmer Font made his first start with the Mets and the sixth start of his career after he was aquired from the Tampa Bays Rays on Tuesday. Font started out well with a scoreless bottom of the first inning, but gave up a solo homer to 1B Eric Hosmer in the bottom of the second. He gave up another run in the bottom of the third inning after Padres starter Matt Schram hit a double and then gave up a pop single to RF Franmil Reyes that fell in between three defenders which scored Schram. Font settled down after that with a scoreless bottom of the fourth and was taken out after the inning with 60 pitches. His final line was: two runs, three hits, no walks and one strikeout. He showed a plus fastball topping out at 94-95 mph and also showed a sharp curveball. It was a fine showing for Font in his debut and hopefully he will more opportunities after this and be allowed to go deeper into games. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. RHP Tyler Bashlor gave up a solo homer to RF Hunter Renfroe in the bottom of the seventh. RHP Drew Gagnon had 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning.
The offense got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning after LF Jeff McNeil lead off with a double and SS Amed Rosario drove him in with an RBI single. Catcher Tomas Nido hit a solo homer in the top of the second. After that the bats were shut down and weren't able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the top of the seventh and ninth inning. McNeil and Nido were the only players in the starting lineup to have two hits.
The Mets are off tomorrow and return home Friday night against the Miami Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
