The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 5-3 tonight to snap their five game losing streak and improved their record to 21-25. The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning after SS Amed Rosario hit a solo homer out of the second spot. Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso also hit a solo homer for his 15th homer which a franchise rookie record for most homers by a rookie before the All-Star break. In the bottom of the third inning, Rosario lead off with a walk and then three batters later, catcher Wilson Ramos singled and then 3B Todd Frazier drove in Rosario with a RBI single. RF Carlos Gomez followed with an RBI double. In the bottom of the eighth, Gomez walked with one out and moved to second on a failed pick-up attempt by Nationals reliever RHP Joe Ross. 1B Dom Smith came up later in the inning against new reliever RHP Tony Sipp and drove in a much needed insurance run with an RBI single.

RHP Wilmer Font made his third start and had a difficult top of the first inning throwing 30 pitches. Font settled down after that with quick second and third innings and faced six batters. In the top of the fourth, he ran into trouble after he gave up a lead-off homer to 2B Anthony Rendon and after getting two outs, he walked 1B Gerardo Parra and RF Victor Robles. Font gave up an RBI single to catcher Yan Gomes and struck out Nationals starter LHP Patrick Corbin to end the inning and was then taken out. His final line was two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings. RHP Drew Gagnon came in next and had another impressive performance with two scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Gagnon picked up his second win. RHP Jeurys Familia followed with a scoreless top of the seventh inning. He stayed in for the top of the eighth and was taken out after giving up a one out double to Rendon. LHP Daniel Zamora came in and gave up an RBI single to LF Juan Soto. RHP Robert Gsellman had to come it and retired 2B Howie Kendrick and Parra to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and had a difficult beginning and hit Robles and gave up a single to catcher Yan Gomes. Diaz settled down and got catcher Kurt Suzuki to fly out to LF Brandon Nimmo and SS Trea Turner to ground out to first.  He closed it out after RF Adam Eaton flew out to Nimmo and he picked up his 11th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Nationals at 7:10 p.m.
