The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 this afternoon to split their four game series and improved their record to 16-15. RHP Noah Syndergarrd had a dominating performance with a complete-game shutout (9 IP), 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, and 10 strikeouts. In addition to his success on the mound, he drove in the only run of the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning. He became the eighth pitcher since 1908 to pitch a shutout and hit a homer for the only run of the game. He is the first pitcher to do it since Bob Welch in 1983.
Syndegarrd needed to deliver a performance like this since the bulllpen has been shaky lately and needed a rest. He showed today why he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. With Jacob deGrom throwing seven scoreless innings yesterday, it appears that deGrom and Syndergarrd are back on track and pitched like top of the rotation aces. Now hopefully Syndergarrd can build off this outing in his next start.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Milwaukee Brewers at 8:10 p.m.
