The New York Mets lost to the Milwauke Brewers 4-3 tonight in 18 innings and dropped their record to under .500 at 16-17. RHP Zack Wheeler bounced back after his last outing with a strong performance allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and ten strikeouts. It was the second time this year Wheeler has had double-digit strikeouts. LHP Daniel Zamora came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. RHP Seth Lugo followed with three scoreless innings in the bottom of the ninth, tenth, and eleventh innings. RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless bottom of the 12th inning. RHP Drew Gagnon started in the bottom of the thirteenth and was taken out with two outs. LHP Ryan O'Rourke had to come in and got catcher Yasmani Grandal to fly out to end the inning. RHP Robert Gsellman followed with three scoreless innings in the bottom of the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth innings. RHP Chris Flexen followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventeenth inning, but ran into trouble in the bottom of eighteenth after walking 1B Eric Thames and Grandal and 3B Travis Shaw to load the bases. He gave up a two-run walk-off single to LF Ryan Braun for his sixth hit of the game.
The offense didn't much all night and had ten hits. In the top of the second inning, catcher Wilson Ramos singled and SS Amed Rosario drove him in with an RBI triple. After that the bats went quiet until the top of the ninth inning when 1B Pete Alonso led off with a game-tying solo homer. It was Alonso's first homer this month after hitting nine in April. It was also his eighth homer in the seventh inning or later, leading the Majors. After Alonso's homer, the bats were shut down again until the top of the eighteenth after SS Adeinhy Hechavarria singled and stole second and LF Jeff McNeil drove him in with an RBI single for his third consecutive hit.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at 2:10 p.m. against the Brewers.
