The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 6-4 this afternoon to complete the four game sweep at Citi Field and improved their record to 24-25. It was the first time that the Mets have swept the Nationals/Expos at home since 1972. LHP Steven Matz worked around a lot of traffic in every inning and battled through it. He threw five scoreless innings, but ran trouble in the top of the sixth after LF Juan Soto doubled to lead off the inning. 2B Brian Dozer bunted Soto over to third base, but 2B Adieny Hecchavaria threw the ball away which allowed Soto to score. Matz was able to threw Dozier out at third and after allowing a single to RF Victor Robles struck out catcher Yan Gomes and RF Stephen Strasburg to end the inning. His final line was 6 innings, 10 hits, ER, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Robert Gsellman followed in the top of the eighth inning and started out well striking out 2B Howie Kendrick but then walked Soto and gave up a single to Robles and RBI double to Gomes. Gsellman then gave up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Garardo Parra. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning and a couple of strikeouts to pick up his 12th save.

The offense was shut down for the first four inning against Nationals starter RHP Stephen Strasburg, but broke through in the bottom of the fifth. RF Carlos Gomez singled and then stole second and advanced to third base on a throwing error by Gomes. Gomez scored on a sacrifice fly by CF Juan Lagares. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LF J.D. Davis singled and 3B Todd Frazier was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on a wild pitch and 1B Pete Alonso drove in Davis with a sacrifice fly. Catcher Wilson Ramos followed with a RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth inning, pinch-hitter Dom Smith singled to lead off the inning, but Frazier and Alonso struck out. Ramos walked and then Gomez came through with a three-run homer.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Detroit Tigers at 7:10 p.m.
