The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 7-6 this afternoon to lose two out of three gams in the series and dropped their record to 20-22. RHP Zack Wheeler had a difficult beginning allowing four runs in the bottom of the first due to three singles in a row to star the game and back-to-back RBI doubles. Wheeler settled down after that scoreless innings in the bottom of the second, third and fourth, but ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fifth after he gave up a pop-fly double to 2B Howie Kendrick which caused 2B Robinson Cano and RF Michael Conforto to have a collision. Conforto left the game with a concussion. RF Geraldo Parra followed with a two-run homer. Wheeler had a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning and taken out after the inning. His final line was 6 innings, 11 hits, 6 earned runs, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts with one home run allowed. LHP Daniel Zamora came in next in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a run. RHP Robert Gsellman had to come in to finish the bottom of the seventh. LHP Daniel Zamora threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
The offense was held scoreless by Nats starter Annibal Sanchez for the first two innings, but woke up in the top of the third inning after RHP Zack Wheeler and LF Jeff McNeil singled. McNeil later left the game with abdominal tightness. Two batters later, 2B Robinson Cano hit an RBI ground-rule double. RF Michael Conforto followed with a three-run homer to tie the game. The bats went quiet until the top of the ninth against Nationals closer Sean Doolittle. LF Brandon Nimmo walked, 3B Todd Frazier hit a pinch-hit double, catcher Wilson Ramos hit a pinch-hit single and CF Juan Lagares hit an RBI single. 1B Dom Smith struck out, but Cano singled to load the bases for CF Keon Broxton. Broxton's struggles continued after he stuck out to end the game.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Miami Marlins at 7:05 p.m.
