The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 6-5 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 22-25. RHP Zack Wheeler had a scoreless top of the first inning, but gave up a solo homer to LF Juan Soto in the top of the second inning. Wheeler settled down after that into a nice groove and cruised through the first six innings at 99 pitches. He was given an opportunity to back out for the top of the seventh due to the shortened pen, and almost got out of the inning, but gave up a two-run homer to 2B Brian Dozier with two outs who was previously 0-37. His final line was thee runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. RHP Jeurys Familia came on in the top of the eighth inning and gave up an RBI double to SS Trea Turner and was taken out with one out in the inning. LHP Daniel Zamora appeared next and gave up an RBI double to RF Juan Soto. Zamora struck out 1B Gerardo Parra and then RHP Tyler Bashlor was called upon to finish out the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz had a quick top of the ninth inning with two strikeouts and picked up his first win of the season.
The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings, but broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Catcher Wilson Ramos walked and CF Juan Lagares was hit by a pitch. Wheeler had a poor sacrifice bunt and Ramos was thrown out at third base. LF Jeff McNeil drove in Lagares with an RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Ramos singled and Dom Smith walked as a pinch hitter. J.D. Davis also pinch-hit and delivered with a three-run homer. In the bottom of the eighth, first baseman Pete Alonso tied the game with a towering blast that just hooked inside the foul pole in left field. This was his 16th homer which breaks a team-record for most homers by a rookie before the All-Star break. In the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Adeiny Hechavarria and J.D. Davis walked. McNeil reached on a fielder's choice, but SS Amed Rosario hit a chopper to Nationals shortstop Trea Turner that he beat out for a walk-off win.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Nationals at 7:10 p.m.
