The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 4-0 tonight for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 16-19. RHP Jacob deGrom started out well with three hitless innings until the bottom of the fourth after he gave up a solo homer to LF Hunter Renfroe. He settled down after that until the bottom of the seventh after 1B Eric Hosmer singled and Renfroe doubled. 3B Ty France hit a sacrifice fly, but deGrom didn't gave any more runs after that and was taken out after the inning. His final line was 7 innings, 2 earned runs, 4 hits, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts. LHP Justin Wilsom came in next after returning from the injured list and retired two hitters quickly, but then gave up an infield hit to CF Manuel Margot and a base hit to SS Manny Machado. Wilson then gave up a two-run double to 1B Eric Hosmer to make it 4-0 and broke the game open.
The offense couldn't do anything against Padres rookie stater sensation RHP Chris Paddack. Paddack showed why he is one of the best pitchers in the game with his upper 90s fastball, nasty change-up and developing slider. He struck out eight hitters in four innings. Paddack lasted in the top of eighth and was taken out after LF Jeff McNeil singled. His final line was 7 2/3 scoreless innings with four hits and one walk with 11 strikeouts. RHP Craig Stammen followed and struck out 1B Pete Alonso with two men on to end the inning. Stammen stayed in for the top of the ninth inning and threw a 1-2-3 inning. They have now scored seven runs in their last six games.
The Mets next game is tonight at the Padres at 10:10 p.m.
