Mets vs. Orioles Game 59 Recap

RHP Zack Wheeler


The New York Mets lost to the Baltimore Orioles 2-0 today for their sixth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 27-32. RHP Zack Wheeler had an outstanding outing. Wheeler worked around a single by CF Adam Jones in the top of the first inning and was able to get out of the inning after 3B Manny Machado grounded into a double play. In the top of the second inning, he gave up a one-out single to RF Mark Trumbo and then struck out 1B Chris Davis and retied 3B Danny Valencia to end the inning. In the top of the third inning, Wheeler struck out catcher Chris Sisco and opposing pitcher Dylan Bundy to begin the inning, hit LF Trey Mancini and then got Jones to ground out the end the inning. In the top of the fourth inning. Wheeler worked around a lead-off walk to Machado and a single by Davis for another scoreless inning. In the top of the fifth inning, he gave up a lead-off hit by pitch to Sisco, but then retired Bundy, Mancini and Jones in order to end the inning. Wheeler finished up strong after he threw 1-2-3 innings in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. His final line was three hits, no walks and five strikeouts in seven scoreless innings. He lowered his ERA to 4.57. RHP Jeurys Familia came in the top of the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off single to 1B Pedro Alvarez, one-out single to Jones and a sacrifice fly to Machado.  RHP Robert Gsellman followed and pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

The offense continued to struggle today and managed only five hits. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera had the first hit, a double in the bottom of the fourth inning, but was stranded after CF Michael Conforto, 3B Todd Frazier and RF Jay Bruce retired in order. Zack Wheeler had a single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but SS Amed Rosario flew out for the last out of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the bats went down in order and loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Rosario struck out for the last out. In the bottom of the eighth inning, LF Brandon Nimmo lead off with a single, but was quickly erased off the basepaths after 2B Asdrubal Cabrera grounded into a double play which trying to bunt back to Orioles reliever RHP Richard Blier and then doubled off Nimmo. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Frazier led off with a single, but then Bruce, Frazier and 1B Adrian Gonzalez all went down in order to end the game.

The Mets have an off day tomorrow and return to action on Friday against the New York Yankees at 7:10 at Citi Field in the first game of the Subway Series.
