The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 8-2 tonight and dropped their record to 28-35. RHP Zack Wheeler started out well with three scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wheeler gave up a lead-off walk to 1B Freddie Freeman and then singles to RF Nick Markakis and catcher Tyler Flowers to load the bases. He was able to get a 1-2-5 double play, but he then allowed a RBI single to CF Ender Inciarte. He bounced back with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning, but gave up a lead-off homer to Freeman in the bottom of the sixth inning and later another RBI single to Inciarte. Wheeler was taken out after he walked LF Charlie Culberson and pinch-hitter Preston Tucker to load the bases. His final line was six runs, eight hits, four walks and two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and gave up a grand slam to 2B Ozzie Albies. Sewald gave up another run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by RF Nick Markakis. RHP Jacob Rhyme followed and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
The offense was held hitless for the first four innings until catcher Devin Mesoraco and 1B Dominic Smith singled with one out in the top of the fifth but were left stranded and SS Amed Rosario and Wheeler popped out to end the inning. 3B Todd Frazier and LF Brandon Nimmo drew back-to-back walks in the top of the sixth inning and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera reached on an error with one out. RF Jay Bruce drove in the only runs of the game with a two-run double.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at 12:10 P.M. against the Braves in the final game of the series.
