The New York Mets lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 tonight for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 31-42. This was their fifteenth loss this month and 23th loss in their last 30 games. RHP Zack Wheeler started out well with four strikeouts in the first two innings. Wheeler was helped out by his defense in the top of the third inning after CF Michael Conforto made an incredible catch to rob Dodgers CF Joc Pederson of a double. He worked around a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth inning and retired the next three hitters in order. Wheeler had 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning, but struggled in the top of the sixth inning. He gave up back-to-back walks, a single to RF Matt Kemb and a grand slam to 1B Cody Bellinger. Wheeler came back out for the top of the seventh inning and had a 1-2-3 inning. His final line was four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. RHP Anthony Swarsak came in next and threw a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning. RHP Chris Beck gave up a solo homer to RF Yasiel Puig in the top of the ninth inning.
The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings, but broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Conforto singled with two outs and RF Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer, his first as a Met. Jose Reyes hit a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was left stranded at second base. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Conforto reached on an infield hit and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera reached third base on an error. Bautista grounded into a double-play to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, catcher Devin Mesoraco, shortstop Amed Rosario, and 1B Dominic Smith went down in order against Dodgers closer Kenley Jensen,
The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Dodgers at 7:15 P.M.
