The New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 2-0 today and were swept in the four game series and dropped their record to 27-30. LHP Steven Matz had one of his best outings of the season and got out of a based loaded jam in the top of the third inning after he threw out a runner homer on a safety squeeze. Matz was let down his defense in the top of the seventh inning, which helped 2B Javier Baez steal home and catcher Wilson Contreras to score on a sacrifice fly by 2B Ben Zoborist. His final line was two runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. This was the first time Matz has pitched into the seventh inning all season and has looked better over his last few starts. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and threw two scoreless innings in the top of the eighth and ninth innings.
The offense struggled against Cubs starter LHP Jon Lester and were held hitless for the first 5.2 innings. They left seven runners on base and were hitless with RISP (runners in scoring position). CF Michael Conforto, catcher Kevin Plawecki, and SS Amed Rosario had the only three hits of the game. Conforto and LF Brandon Nimmo both reached base twice and 3B Jose Bautista, Plawecki and Rosario reached base once.
The Mets have an off day tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday, June 5th against the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 P.M.
