Mets vs. Orioles Game 58 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 tonight for their fifth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 27-31. LHP Jason Vargas got off to a rocky start in the top of the first inning after he allowed an RBI single to SS Manny Machado and a sacrifice fly to 3B Danny Valencia. Vargas settled down after got out of the trouble in the top of the second inning. He had his 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third inning. He was able to work around a lead-off walk to 2B Jordan Schoop in the top of the fourth inning. Vargas finished up strong with a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning. His final line was two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in five innings. LHP Seth Lugo came in next and had an outstanding performance with three scoreless innings in the top of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. RHP Anthony Swarsak made his return in the top of the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning.

The offense struggled all night and managed only three hits. Catcher Kevin Plawecki was the first baserunner in the game after he drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the second inning. RF Jay Bruce lead off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double, which was the first hit of the game. 1B Adrian Gonzalez popped out, but pinch-hitter Jose Bautista drove in the only run of the game with  a sacrifice fly. SS Amed Rosario struck out to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Bruce singled with one out and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gonzalez struck out to end the inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Rosario walked with one out and then LF Brandon Nimmo reached on an error after he bunted down the third base line. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Bruce walked with two outs, but Plawecki popped out to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the series against the Orioles at 1:10 P.M.
