The New York Mets lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 last night and dropped their record to 26-27. RHP Tyler Bashlor came in next in the bottom of the sixth inning and gave up a game-tying solo homer to 2B Chris Tyler. Bashlor then gave up back-to-back hits to catcher Russel Martin and pinch-hitter David Freese. He was then taken out and then LHP Daniel Zamora gave up a three-run homer to 2B Enrique Hernandez. Mets vs. Marlins Game 44 Recap

LHP Steven Matz (Credits to Newsday.com)

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 2-0 this afternoon for their fourth consecutive loss and dropped their record to 20-24. LHP Steven Matz made his first start since May 9th after he spent 10 days on the disabled list due to forearm nerve irritation. Matz gave up a lead-off homer to centerfielder Jon Berdi in the bottom of the first inning, but settled down after that in the inning and threw a scoreless bottom of the second inning. He ran into more trouble in the bottom of the third after he walked Berdi with one out and later gave up an RBI single to 3B Brian Anderson. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Matz gave up another lead-off hit on a single to struck out 1B Martin Prado and LF Harold Ramirez, but walked catcher Jorge Alfaro and gave up a single to Marlins starting pitcher RHP Pablo Lopez to load the bases. He was taken out after that with 81 pitches due to a limited workload after coming off an injury. His final line was two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings. RHP Tyler Bashlor came in and struck out Berdi with the based loaded and stayed in for the bottom of the fifth and threw a scoreless inning to bring his ERA down to 1.17 over 7.2 innings pitched. This has been a recurring theme all year with the offense and it's frustrating to see fine pitching performances get wasted with nothing to show for it.

Mets vs. Reds Game 31 Recap

Mets RHP Noah Syndergarrd (Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com)

The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 this afternoon to split their four game series and improved their record to 16-15. RHP Noah Syndergarrd had a dominating performance with a complete-game shutout (9 IP), 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, and 10 strikeouts. In addition to his success on the mound, he drove in the only run of the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning. He became the eighth pitcher since 1908 to pitch a shutout and hit a homer for the only run of the game. He is the first pitcher to do it since Bob Welch in 1983.

Syndegarrd needed to deliver a performance like this since the bulllpen has been shaky lately and needed a rest. He showed today why he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. With Jacob deGrom throwing seven scoreless innings yesterday, it appears that deGrom and Syndergarrd are back on track and pitched like top of the rotation aces. Now hopefully Syndergarrd can build off this outing in his next start.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Milwaukee Brewers at 8:10 p.m.
