The New York Mets defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 35-49. RHP Jacob deGrom had another outstanding start. deGrom worked out a lead-off double in the top of the first inning and a two-out triple in the second. The only run he allowed was a solo homer by SS Willy Adames. His final line was 8 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 1 one walk and 9 strikeouts. deGrom received another no-decision and he lowered his ERA to 1.79. RHP Jeurys Familia came in the top of the ninth inning and loaded the bases, but was able to get out of trouble. Familia picked up his fourth win of the season.
The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings. CF Brandon Nimmo reached on an error in the bottom of the third inning and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera drove him in with an RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth inning, 3B Todd Frazier drew a lead-off walk and catcher Devin Mesoraco singled. SS Amed Rosario bunted them over to second and third. 1B Dominic Smith couldn't drive them in and Nimmo walked to load the bases. RF Jose Bautista stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off grand slam. This was the first walk-off homer of Bautista's career.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the Rays at 4:10 P.M.
