Mets vs. Pirates Game 103 Recap

RHP Zack Wheeler

The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 this afternoon to split their four-game series and improved their record to 44-59. The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings, but broke through in the top of the fifth inning after CF Austin Jackson singled and RHP Zack Wheeler drove him with an RBI double for the only run of the game, which is all he would need.

Wheeler was dominat tonight from the beginning and worked around trouble in the bottom of the first inning. He had a 1-2-3 bottom of the second inning and gave up a hit-by-pitch to RF Gregor Palonco in the bottom of the third inning. He gave up another hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, but had a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth. Wheeler had a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning and was taken out with 89 pitches. His final line was 6 innings, 5 hits, 0 earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts. He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 4.11. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. RHP Anthony Swarsak closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning and picked up his third save.

The Mets have an off day tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday, July 31st at 7:05 against the Washington Nationals.
