RHP Corey Oswalt |
The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 in the second game of their doubleheader and dropped their record to 36-52. RHP Corey Oswalt started out well with four perfect innings and retired the first 12 hitters he faced with seven strikeouts and had a no-hitter going into the fifth. His curveball was sharper and his velocity was up compared to his previous starts. In the top of the fifth inning, he ran into trouble after he walked three batters and gave up a three-run double to Phillies starter RHP Aaron Nola. Oswalt bounced with a scoreless top of the sixth inning and was then taken out. His final line was 6 innings, 3 earned runs, one hit, three walks and seven strikeouts. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Jacob Rhyme and LHP Jerry Blevins combined to pitch a scoreless top of the eighth inning. Blevins stayed in for the top of the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning.
The offense was shut down by Phillies starter RHP Aaron Nola who retired 18 hitters in a row after he gave up a hit to 3B Wilmer Flores in the first inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, CF Brandon Nimmo was hit by a pitch with two outs and Flores doubled him home. LF Michael Conforto walked, but catcher Devin Mesoraco struck out to end the game.
The Mets next game is at 7:10 P.M. tomorrow night against the Phillies in the final game of the series.
