Mets vs. Pirates Game 101 Recap

LHP Jason Vargas


The New York Mets lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 tonight and dropped their record to 43-58. The offense jumped on the board in the top of the first inning after LF Michael Conforto hit a three-run homer. In the top of the sixth inning, Conforto and RF Jose Bautista drew walks to start the inning. 2B Jeff McNeil then dropped a sacrifice bunt, but reached on an error to load the bases. 3B Jose Reyes hit a fly-ball, but Conforto was able to score on an error.

LHP Jason Vargas made his return from the disabled list and had a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning. Vargas gave up a two-run homer to 3B David Freese in the bottom of the second inning, but had another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third. He got out of a based loaded jam in the fourth, and was taken out with one out in the bottom of the fifth after he walked LF Jordan Luplow. His final line was three runs on two hits in 4/1 innings. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and gave up a two-run single to Freese. RHP Tyler Bashlot threw two scoreless innings in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. RHP Jacob Rhyme came in next and got one out in the bottom of the eighth before he was taken out. LHP Jerry Blevins followed and got the second out of the inning. RHP Anthony Swarsak got the last out in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Tim Peterson gave up back-to-back walks to 2B Josh Harrison and RF Gregor Polanco to begin the bottom of the ninth. Peterson walked catcher Elias Diaz and then gave up a walk-off single to Freese.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Pirates at 7:10 P.M.
