RHP Jacob deGrom
|
The New York Mets lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 tonight for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 43-59. RHP Jacob deGrom dominated through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out 2B Adam Frazier and CF Starling Marte to begin the inning, but then gave a single to RF Gregor Polanco who stole second and scored on an RBI single by 3B Colin Moran. In the bottom of the seventh inning, he gave up a leadoff single LF Jordan Luplow and two batters later a single to single to SS Jordy Mercer. deGrom gave up a RBI single to pinch-hitter David Freese and an RBI double to Frazier and was taken out after the inning. His final line was three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. deGrom's ERA went up to 1.82. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next in the bottom of the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off double to Polanco and an RBI single to Moran. He gave up another RBI single to catcher Francisco Cervilli, but was able to finish off the inning.
The offense struggled all night and managed six hits. They left eight men on base. This has been a recurring theme in DeGrom's starts this year and caused him to have a losing record of 5-6, even though he leads the National League in ERA. He deserves a lot better and should have had many more wins over the course of the season.
The Mets next game is at 1:35 P.M. tomorrow afternoon against the Pirates in the final game of the series.
