Mets vs. Yankees Game 34 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the New York Yankees 5-2 this afternoon  for their third consecutive loss in 8 innings in the second game of their doubleheader to lose three out of five games in the series and dropped their record to 15-19. RHP Seth Lugo started out well with two scoreless in the top of the first and second innings, but gave up a lead-off homer to SS Tyler Wade in the top of the third. Lugo loaded the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and was then taken out. His final line was 3 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. LHP Chasen Shrieve came in next and retired Wade on a flyout to end the inning. Shrieve stayed in for the top of the fifth and threw a scoreless inning. He threw another scoreless inning in the top of the sixth and was helped out by a double play. Schrieve has now thrown 7 consecutive scoreless innings. RHP Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Drew Smith came on in the top of the eighth inning with a free runner on second due to the new extra inning rules this year and then allowed a walk and later loaded the bases. Smith later loaded the based and gave up a grand slam to catcher Gary Sanchez.

The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings against Yankees starter rookie RHP Deivi Garcia who was making his ML debut until the top of the sixth after LF Jeff McNeil reached second after 1B Luke Volt bobbled a grounder. Two batters later, 1B Dom Smith drove in McNeil with an RBI single. In the top of the eighth inning, RF Michael Conforto hit an RBI single and they loaded the based loaded, but catcher Wilson Ramos stuck out to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home against the Marlins at 1:10 p.m.
