The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 tonight for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 9-13. LHP Steven Matz started out pitching well until one run on a solo homer by 2B Jean Segura through the first four innings. However, it all unraveled for Matz in the bottom of the fifth after he gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases. He walked CF Andrew McCutchen with the based loaded to bring in a run and then gave up a bases clearing double to 1B Rhys Hoskins. Matz then allowed a RBI double to RF Bryce Harper and was then taken out in the bottom of the fifth with one out. His final line was 4.1 innings, 5 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. RHP Jeurys Familia had to come in to get the last two outs in the bottom of the fifth and stayed in for the bottom of the sixth and threw a scoreless inning. Familia threw 1.2 scoreless innings and allowed one out. RHP Brad Brach followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Dellin Betances threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
The offense struggled and didn't do much against Phillies ace RHP Aaron Nola and were held scoreless for the first eight innings. They managed six hits and were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. LF Dom Smith drove in the only two runs on a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning. It is the fourth consecutive game Smith has homered.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Phillies at 1:00 p.m.
